1988 Island Packet 38

Irvington, Virginia

$119,000

The Island Packet 38 was the first Island Packet model to feature two head compartments, setting the standard for all subsequent IP’s by combining enhanced creature comforts with Island Packet’s traditional seakeeping capabilities.  The yacht has been used only sparingly in recent years but has received loving care, reflected in the new equipment and upgrades below.  The result is a great opportunity to purchase a yacht capable of extensive coastal or long-distance cruising, fully found and a wonderful liveaboard.

Topsides the Island Packet 38 features a large unobstructed deck and cabin top surfaces with raised bulwarks, premium coarse diamond non-skid, full length cabin top handrails, welded double bow and stern rails and double lifelines.  The custom full enclosure incorporates additional handrails for ease of access; the enclosure also includes screens for summer days at anchor.

The moderate full keel design, unique to Island Packet combines a contemporary performance hull form with a foil shaped full keel that provides spirited performance with comfortable cruising.  Spinache, an Island Packet 35, regularly won the Marion to Bermuda race with its single handing skipper.  The current owners of Horizons returned from the Dominican Republic to Miami in five spirited days and nights.

The interior features a tri-cabin layout with large forward and aft staterooms, each with private access to an adjoining head with shower.  The master stateroom forward utilizes the full beam of the yacht to create an open, roomy layout.  Additional cabinetry was added by the first owner for more storage for extended periods aboard.  The head features a standing room shower.

The aft cabin features a queen size mattress, and the hanging locker is cedar lined.

The main salon is bright and open.  Large settees, a wide sole, wall-mounted retractable table, pullout double berth and numerous stowage areas allow for a variety of uses, including use as an extra cabin.  The navigation station was extended to allow for the addition of extra navigation and audio equipment.  Extra light comes into the cabin from the poly cabin doors used when not in a seaway.

The large wrap-around galley is convenient to both cockpit and salon yet out of companionway traffic and features a new Seaward Princess stove.

TOPSIDES/HULL

Topsides, the Island Packet 38 features large unobstructed deck and cabin top surfaces. Safe and secure deck work is ensured with raised bulwarks, premium course diamond nonskid, full length cabin top hand rails, welded double bow and stern rails and double lifelines. The deck is trimmed with a wide teak cap rail and a stainless steel striker all around, with teak cockpit coamings and detail trim. All nonskid surfaces are molded in contrasting tan. The roomy cockpit features contoured cockpit seats with deep coaming backrests, a comfortable helmsman's seat, a cavernous locker to starboard, storage tray to port and rack and pinion geared wheel steering for precise feel and utmost reliability. Other details include a fresh water cockpit shower unit, protected engine control panel, folding swim ladder, and lifeline stern and side gates.

The hull is molded in one piece with extra strong triaxial glass, unified with an engineered molded interior grid structure. Deck laminate is cored with advanced Polycel, a tough microsphere and resin matrix that is heat, rot and delamination proof. PolyClad 3 is used on all exterior surfaces backed with a vinylester laminate in the hull. The deck is attached to the integrally molded hull flange with bolts, lock nuts, and urethane adhesive sealant. All deck hardware is thru-bolted with aluminum back up plates.

The moderate full keel design, unique to Island Packet, combines a contemporary performance hull form with a foil shaped full keel providing the benefits of spirited, powerful performance and seakeeping comparable to deeper fin keel designs while providing the ability to explore shallow coastal waters.
